Akumal, ‘the place of turtles’ in Mayan, is a small destination in Riviera Maya, Mexico; which has incredible spots to snorkel and discover colorful underwater species. Snorkeling in Akumal became extremely popular, at the point that regulations were imposed in order to protect the environment from any possible harm produced by human activity.
Even though the regulations, tourists still looking for this experience, since is one of the most authentics worldwide in terms of actually watching species in their habitual environment. This because snorkeling is made near the second largest reef barrier of the entire planet, the Mesoamerican Reef Barrier System (MRBS).
What to expect when visiting Akumal?
If you are traveling to Akumal on your own, you will probably see snorkel tour vendors around the town offering different diving spots. There is something you have to know before hiring any tour and is that it is mandatory the presence of a guide for you to be able to snorkel further after the first 150 feet off-coast, where you may be able to swim with turtles, barracuda, and other species. Tourists can go on their own wearing gear and snorkel, but just in the area that covers those 150 feet. The premise is that someone is required to be watching for the environment while the snorkeling is done. Many tourists just wouldn’t respect the fact that touching species is not permitted. Then, this rule was made, and whoever won’t respect it may get in trouble with local authorities (better to be informed).
By the way, about “local authorities”, you might encounter people trying to outsmart you. Some years ago, Akumal Bay was announced to be a marine area under protection. This has caused a bit of confusion, and some are trying to take advantage. So, watch out for whoever tries to frighten you by asking for “penalty fees” arguing that you shouldn’t be snorkeling on your own. If you stayed within the first 150 ft of the beach, there is nothing you need to worry about more than taking care of your stuff. It could be a good idea to find a place to leave your stuff with lockers, or just not to take any valuable item (just if).
Diving in crystalline waters
Now, if you do are willing to respect these simple rules, snorkeling can be a blissful experience. Once diving into the water, the peace of the underwater kingdom will override any unpleasant mood and make you feel in touch with fishes, turtles, and more.
