During the rainy season, our dream paradise can be hit by a sudden storm or a cloudy day. While these tropical showers don’t often last long, it’s best to stay indoors and not do any water activities until the rain has passed. But this doesn’t mean your plans are ruined. From city museums to subterranean eco-parks, here are our top tips for making the most of your rainy day on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. These are things you can do in Cancun on a rainy day.

Indoor activities in Cancun

JOYÀ, Cirque du Soleil

Admire ancient artifacts at the Mayan Museum of Cancun, this is something you can do in the hotel zone as you wait for the rain to stop or in between activities.

If the rain isn’t heavy, you can take a bus to Playa del Carmen and explore indoor attractions in Playa del Carmen such as the 3D Museum of Wonders, Frida Kahlo Museum, or Cirque du Soleil JOYÀ. Join a tour of the Yucatan’s underground rivers and cenotes at the Kantun Chi Ecopark.

Our best recommendation is JOYÀ, this is the news and the only permanent Cirque du Soleil show in the Center and Latin America. Dinner, show, and entertainment. This is a must when especially visiting the Rivera Maya.

Bars and nightclubs

The City, nightclub in Cancun

Rainy evening? Have fun in one of Cancun’s famous clubs. From Mandala Groups clubs to Coco Bongo and The City. You can party like a rockstar and forget about the rain.

Some bars and nightclubs are semi-opened so when it’s raining this is something you need to consider. La Vaquita, Mandala, and Congo are some of the clubs that have semi-open areas. Rain can even add some fun to the night, right?

Restaurants

ILIOS, greek restaurant in the Hotel Zone

Dry off over tequila and tacos in the Hotel Zone’s lively bars and restaurants. Try that restaurant you’ve been craving the whole vacation. The hotel zone is full of amazing regional and international cuisine that will make you go “wow”. Take your time, have a few drinks, and enjoy the mixology in the best restaurants. Many restaurants in the Hotel Zone also offer themed shows and music acts.

We recommend ILIOS, Puerto Madero, and Hana Polynesian Grill.

Shopping Malls

Browse for bargains in Cancun’s indoor malls, including Luxury Avenue, Plaza Caracol, and Kukulcan Plaza. Get a glimpse of Cancun’s marine life (without getting wet) at the Interactive Aquarium in La Isla Shopping Village. These are all located in the hotel zone, close to your accommodation and other great attractions like the Mayan Museum of Cancun, the Wax Museum, and more. At these shopping centers, you can go on a shopping spree in stores like ZARA, Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, among other high-end brands.

All-Inclusive hotels

This might sound obvious but, just enjoy the day and relax! If the day doesn’t look like going outside to the beach, you still got many things to do in your hotel. Ask the front desk for the shows and special activities they might host while the storm passes by. We know you want to go outside and explore, but when this is not possible, see it as your chance to rest and enjoy the hotel facilities. As obvious as it may sound, many visitors spend so much time outside their hotels, they don’t enjoy all their all-inclusive hotels have to offer.
