Warning: Tropical Storm ‘Nine’ in Cancun could become Hurricane Helene

Potential Cyclone “Nine” has formed very close to the coast of Quintana Roo, prompting the National Water Commission (Comision Nacional del Agua CONAGUA) to issue tropical storm in Cancun alerts and remain on watch for a high probability of it developing into a hurricane, especially affecting the states of Quintana Roo and Yucatán.

As we move through the peak of hurricane season, Tropical Cyclone Nine has a 90% chance of becoming Tropical Storm “Helene.” As a result, the Government of Quintana Roo has issued a new blue alert, indicating minimal danger due to the storm’s proximity to our shores. It is currently located about 606 kilometers southeast of Punta Herrero in Quintana Roo and 205 kilometers south-southeast of Grand Cayman Island.

How Will the Tropical Storm Affect Cancun and Quintana Roo?

Tropical Storm in Cancun N° "Nine"

We are in the peak of hurricane season, and with this tropical storm, Cancun could face anything from heavy rains to high-speed winds. Low-lying areas in the city may experience flooding, and it could significantly impact tourism, with the potential cancellation of outdoor activities both in hotels and around the city.

As of today, the storm is still being monitored for the possibility of becoming the next Hurricane Helene, which could strike the coast of Quintana Roo in the coming days.

Tropical Cyclone Nine is moving north, threatening both Mexico and Cuba, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h and a northward movement of 9 km/h.

According to weather reports, a potential Tropical Storm in Cancun is expected to cause considerable damage.

Helene’s Tropical Storm Path in Cancun

It’s essential to stay informed about the storm’s trajectory, weather updates, and any changes this meteorological phenomenon may present.

The potential Cyclone Nine is expected to develop into a tropical storm in the coming hours and then into a Category 1 hurricane, which may hit the Mexican Caribbean coast on Wednesday, the 25th of this month. According to the storm’s projected path, Hurricane Helene is expected to move toward the Caribbean Sea, continuing its trajectory northward toward Florida, USA, by next Thursday. Therefore, the populations of Mexico, Cuba, and the United States are urged to remain alert to updates on this tropical system as it moves across the Atlantic.

Cancun: Ready to Face Hurricanes

Fortunately, Cancun is fully prepared to handle these types of hydrometeorological phenomena. It’s worth noting that the Governor of Quintana Roo has been working in coordination with military authorities, social sectors, and preventive communities to successfully face this season. As hurricane season began, Governor Mara Lezama overseen the inspection of temporary shelters to ensure they were ready in time for any emergency.

During Hurricane Beryl, Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo kept the public informed about the storm’s trajectory, providing important updates on the phenomenon.

Fortunately, Tropical Storm Helene has not yet developed into a hurricane, so we must stay alert for any official communication, as the storm’s path may change at the last minute. Nevertheless, Cancun is well-prepared for whatever may come.

Conclusion

In summary, although tropical cyclone paths can be unpredictable, Cancun has everything under control. Whether Helene arrives as a tropical storm or veers off entirely, the city is ready to keep all its residents and visitors safe. So, if you have travel plans, you can rest assured knowing that Cancun is always prepared for whatever comes its way.
